Genesis 42:23
And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.
Genesis 42:23 (KJV)
Context
This verse sits within the larger story of Joseph and his brothers. Years earlier, the brothers sold Joseph into slavery. Now, during a severe famine, they have come to Egypt to buy grain. Joseph, once their rejected brother, has risen to a high position in Pharaoh’s court. He recognizes his brothers, but they do not recognize him (Genesis 42:8). In this moment, Joseph speaks to them through an interpreter, even though he understands their Hebrew language perfectly. The brothers speak freely among themselves, not knowing that Joseph comprehends every word.
Meaning
The verse highlights dramatic irony. Joseph knows their language and their hearts, while they remain ignorant of his identity and his understanding. Their conversation reveals their guilt, as they recall how they mistreated him (Genesis 42:21-22). Joseph’s choice to use an interpreter is not deception for its own sake. It is a wise and prudent step. He needs to test their character before revealing himself. By hiding his understanding, he gains a clear view of their true condition.
Biblical connections
This concealment is part of God’s larger plan. Although the brothers meant evil when they sold Joseph, God used their actions for good. The events leading to Joseph’s rise in Egypt eventually preserve his family and many others from famine. This shows divine providence: God works through human choices, even sinful ones, to accomplish His purposes. The testing of the brothers also points toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Joseph does not rush to revenge. Instead, he moves carefully toward a moment when he can reveal himself and restore the family.
Application
This passage reminds believers that God sees and understands all things, even when human perception is limited. Hidden motives are transparent to Him. Therefore, honesty and integrity matter in every relationship. The verse also encourages patience in difficult situations. Joseph waited for the right time to act. Believers can trust God’s timing and wisdom, even when they cannot see the full picture.
Reflection
Consider how God may be working quietly in your own circumstances. Like Joseph, you may face people who do not understand you or situations that seem unclear. Yet God knows every heart and every word. He can bring good out of pain and lead you toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Trust His plan, and let His knowledge of your life bring you peace.
