Genesis 43:17
And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.
Genesis 43:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the larger account of Joseph and his brothers. Years earlier, they sold him into slavery, but God raised him to power in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. A severe famine forced the brothers to travel from Canaan to Egypt to buy grain. They did not recognize Joseph, who tested them to see if their hearts had changed.
Meaning
The “man” is Joseph’s steward, the servant who managed his household. The steward obeyed Joseph’s command and brought the brothers into Joseph’s house. This simple act shows the steward’s faithful service and the orderly way Joseph carried out his plan. It also reveals Joseph’s intention to treat his brothers with hospitality, not revenge.
Biblical connections
Earlier, Joseph had returned the brothers’ money in their sacks (Genesis 42:25-28), which made them afraid. Now, being invited into his house likely increased their anxiety, for they suspected trouble. The steward’s care continues in Genesis 43:24, where he provides water for their feet and fodder for their donkeys, showing genuine hospitality.
Application
This verse reminds us that small acts of obedience matter. The steward did not question Joseph’s orders; he simply carried them out. In our own lives, faithful obedience to God and to those He has placed over us can prepare the way for reconciliation and blessing, even when we do not see the full picture.
Reflection
God works through ordinary people and everyday actions. The steward’s obedience set the stage for a dramatic reunion and the eventual healing of a broken family. We can trust that God is at work in our routines, using our faithful steps to accomplish His purposes.
