Genesis 43:18

Listen to this article

“And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.”

In this verse, we find Joseph’s brothers:expressing their fear and anxiety as they are brought into Joseph’s house. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s provide some context.

At this point in the narrative, Joseph’s brothers had traveled to Egypt to buy grain during a famine. They did not recognize Joseph, who had become a high-ranking official in Egypt. In an effort to test his brothers’ integrity and determine their character, Joseph devised a plan. He instructed his servants to return the money his brothers had used to buy grain in their sacks without their knowledge (Genesis 42:25-28). The brothers discovered the money in their sacks as they traveled back home, and this puzzled them.

When Joseph’s brothers return to Egypt for a second time to buy more grain, they are brought into Joseph’s house. In their fear and confusion, they attribute their predicament to the money that was mysteriously returned to their sacks during their previous visit. They are concerned that Joseph may use this as an opportunity to accuse them of theft and enslave them and their donkeys.

This verse reveals the guilt and anxiety weighing heavily on Joseph’s brothers. They still bear the burden of their past actions, particularly their mistreatment of Joseph. Their fear stems from a guilty conscience and the assumption that Joseph will retaliate against them for their previous actions.

This verse reminds us:of the consequences of our actions. Joseph’s brothers had mistreated him in the past, and now they find themselves facing potential repercussions. It serves as a reminder that our choices and deeds have repercussions, and we often have to confront the consequences of our actions.

Furthermore, this verse demonstrates:the power of forgiveness and redemption. While Joseph’s brothers were consumed by fear, Joseph had already forgiven them. His ultimate goal was not to seek revenge but to reconcile with his family. This story foreshadows the reconciliation and redemption that will take place later in the narrative when Joseph reveals himself to his brothers and forgives them wholeheartedly (Genesis 45:1-15).
