Genesis 43:29

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.”

Context:To better understand Genesis 43:29, it’s important to consider the broader context of the passage. In Genesis 43, we find Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers, now serving as a high-ranking official in Egypt. Famine had spread throughout the land, and Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to buy food. Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him. Joseph tested his brothers to see if they had changed and if they would treat Benjamin, their youngest brother, well.

Reunion and Recognition:In Genesis 43:29, Joseph, unable to contain his emotions, sees his brother Benjamin for the first time in many years. The sight of Benjamin, his mother’s son, triggers a flood of emotions within Joseph. This verse reflects Joseph’s deep longing for his family and his desire to reconnect with his loved ones.

God’s Grace and Blessing:Joseph’s response to seeing Benjamin is noteworthy. Instead of harbouring bitterness or seeking revenge against his brothers, Joseph’s immediate reaction is to bless Benjamin and pray for God’s graciousness upon him. This response highlights Joseph’s character and his trust in God’s sovereignty. It also demonstrates forgiveness and the power of letting go of past hurts.

Reflection on Forgiveness:Joseph’s interaction with his brothers, including this moment with Benjamin, presents a powerful example of forgiveness. Despite the pain and betrayal he experienced, Joseph chose to extend grace and show love to his family. This act of forgiveness foreshadows the reconciliation that will take place later in the story when Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers and forgives them.

Application:Genesis 43:29 encourages us to reflect on our own attitudes toward forgiveness and reconciliation. Just as Joseph forgave his brothers, we are called to extend forgiveness to those who have wronged us. Forgiveness is not always easy, but it allows us to experience healing, restore relationships, and grow in our faith. Joseph’s example also challenges us to trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that He can work through our pain and bring about restoration.

In summary, Genesis 43:29 reveals Joseph’s emotional reaction upon seeing his brother Benjamin and his desire to extend God’s grace upon him. This verse showcases Joseph’s forgiveness and foreshadows the ultimate reconciliation that occurs later in the story. It also provides us with an example of forgiveness and challenges us to extend grace to others in our own lives.
