Genesis 46:15

Listen to this article

“These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padan-aram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.”

Historical Context:Before we dive into the specifics of Genesis 46:15, it’s helpful to understand the broader historical context. Jacob, the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham, had twelve sons. These sons would eventually become the heads of the twelve tribes of Israel. At this point in the narrative, there is a severe famine in the land of Canaan, where Jacob and his family are residing. God instructs Jacob to go down to Egypt, where there is food and provision, and promises to be with him there.

Leah and Her Children:Leah was the first wife of Jacob, and she bore him six sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. Leah’s daughter, Dinah, is also mentioned in this verse. The phrase “which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram” refers to the time when Jacob was living in Haran, where he worked for his uncle Laban and married Leah and her sister Rachel.

The Count of Souls:The verse states that the total number of Jacob’s sons and daughters, including Leah’s children, was thirty-three. It’s important to note that this count doesn’t include Jacob himself, his wives, or any of their servants. This count only pertains to their immediate descendants.

Symbolic Significance:In biblical numerology, numbers often hold symbolic significance. While the number thirty-three may not have a specific symbolic meaning in this context, it signifies the completeness of Leah’s offspring. Each son and daughter represented a part of the fulfillment of God’s promise to multiply Jacob’s descendants into a great nation.

Overall, Genesis 46:15 provides a record of the sons and daughter of Leah, one of Jacob’s wives, as Jacob and his family prepare to journey to Egypt. This verse highlights the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and foreshadows the fulfillment of the covenant made with Abraham to make his descendants into a great nation.
