And the sonnes of Naphtali: Iahzeel, and Guni, and Iezer, and Shillem. Genesis 46:24 (KJV)

Genesis 46:24 is a verse from the Old Testament, specifically from the book of Genesis. It forms part of a genealogical record that lists the members of Jacob’s family who journeyed with him to Egypt. In this passage the focus is on the sons of Naphtali, one of Jacob’s twelve sons.

The names of Naphtali’s sons are given as follows:

  • Jahzeel – The name is understood to mean “God apportions,” “God allots,” or “strength of God.” Both explanations point to the belief that God is the source of provision and strength for His people, reminding us that every blessing and ability comes from Him.
  • Guni – This name is interpreted as “protected” or “defended,” and also as “my treasure” or “my possession.” The dual sense conveys both God’s protective care and the value He places on His people, encouraging believers to find security in Him and to recognize that what we cherish is ultimately a gift from God.
  • Jezer – The meaning given includes “help” or “helper,” as well as “treasure” or “wealth.” These nuances highlight God’s role as a helper in times of need and as the source of both material and spiritual riches, urging us to trust in His assistance and to view blessings as divine provision.
  • Shillem – Derived from a root meaning “to pay” or “to make whole,” Shillem is often rendered “recompense,” “payment,” or “retribution.” This conveys the concept of divine justice, where God rewards the faithful and provides restitution for what is due.

While the verse may appear to be a simple list of names, each name carries significant cultural and theological weight. Together they reflect timeless truths about God’s provision, protection, purpose, and justice. Studying these names invites us to reflect on God’s faithfulness throughout history, to recognize His sovereignty, to trust in His plans, and to live with a sense of purpose, knowing that He will ultimately bring justice and reward to His people.
