Listen to this article

“And Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.”

Context:The verse is part of the account of Joseph, Jacob’s son, who had risen to a position of power and influence in Egypt. During a severe famine, Joseph had brought his family to Egypt and secured them a dwelling in the land of Goshen. In this verse, Jacob, also known as Israel, meets with Pharaoh to request a place for his family to settle.

Jacob’s Blessing:After Jacob’s encounter with Pharaoh, he blesses the ruler. This gesture reveals Jacob’s respect and acknowledgement of Pharaoh’s authority. It also shows Jacob’s gratitude for the provision and protection that Egypt had offered to him and his family during the famine.

Jacob’s Departure:Following the blessing, Jacob leaves Pharaoh’s presence. This signifies that Jacob’s purpose has been accomplished, and he can now proceed with the next steps of settling his family in Egypt.

Respect for Authority:Jacob’s blessing of Pharaoh demonstrates the biblical principle of honouring and respecting those in authority. Despite being a chosen vessel of God, Jacob humbly acknowledges Pharaoh’s position and offers his blessing.

Gratitude and Appreciation:Jacob’s blessing also reflects his gratitude towards Egypt for providing refuge and sustenance to his family during a time of famine. It reminds us to express appreciation for the assistance and support we receive from others.

Fulfillment of Purpose:Jacob’s departure from Pharaoh’s presence signifies the accomplishment of his immediate goal. It reminds us that there are times when we have a specific purpose or task to fulfil, and once completed, it is essential to move forward to the next phase of our journey.
