Genesis 47:31

Listen to this article

“And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. And Israel bowed himself upon the bed’s head.”

This verse is part of the account of Joseph and his family’s settlement in Egypt during a severe famine. It specifically refers to the interaction between Joseph and his father Jacob (also known as Israel) shortly before Jacob’s death.

In this verse, Jacob asks Joseph to make a solemn oath or vow to fulfil a specific request. The context of the verse reveals that Jacob is concerned about his burial arrangements. He wants to be buried in the land of Canaan, the promised land that God had promised to Jacob and his descendants. Jacob wanted to ensure that his final resting place would be in the land that God had designated for his people.

Joseph, understanding the importance of his father’s request, agrees to swear an oath. By doing so, he commits himself to fulfil Jacob’s wish regarding his burial. Joseph recognises the significance of this promise and the value it holds for his father.

After Joseph agrees to Jacob’s request, the verse concludes by saying, “And Israel bowed himself upon the bed’s head.” This indicates that Jacob, in response to Joseph’s commitment, expressed his gratitude and offered a gesture of worship or reverence. It symbolises Jacob’s faith in God’s faithfulness and his confidence in Joseph’s obedience to carry out his request.

Context:This passage highlights several important aspects. Firstly, it emphasises the significance of honouring the wishes and desires of our loved ones, especially concerning matters of great importance to them. Jacob’s request regarding his burial place was deeply tied to his faith and the promises of God.

Secondly, it demonstrates the value of making solemn promises and fulfilling them. Joseph’s willingness to swear an oath to his father reflects his integrity and commitment to honour his father’s wishes. In our own lives, it is important to take our commitments seriously and follow through on our promises.

Finally, this verse reminds us of the faithfulness of God. Jacob’s desire to be buried in the promised land of Canaan is a testament to his belief in God’s covenant promises. Despite being in Egypt at the time, Jacob held on to the hope that God would fulfil His promise and bring his descendants back to the land He had designated for them.

In summary, Genesis 47:31 highlights the importance of honouring the desires of our loved ones, making and fulfilling solemn promises, and trusting in the faithfulness of God’s promises. It serves as a reminder to value and respect the wishes of those close to us and to hold fast to our commitments and trust in God’s faithfulness.
