Posted on 1 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And one told Jacob, and said, Behold, thy son Joseph cometh unto thee: and Israel strengthened himself, and sat upon the bed.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context. Genesis 48 is a chapter that describes the end of Jacob’s life and the blessings he gives to his grandsons, Ephraim and Manasseh, who were born to his son Joseph in Egypt.

The Arrival of Joseph:In Genesis 48:2, we see that Jacob, also known as Israel, receives news that his son Joseph is coming to see him. This news prompts a response from Jacob. It’s important to note that Jacob had believed Joseph to be dead for many years, so the news of his arrival is met with great joy and anticipation.

Israel’s Strengthening:The verse mentions that Israel (Jacob) “strengthened himself.” This phrase reflects Jacob’s response to the news of Joseph’s arrival. It indicates that Jacob summoned his remaining strength, both physically and emotionally, to prepare himself for this significant moment. It demonstrates his eagerness and excitement to see his beloved son once again.

Symbolism of the Bed:The verse concludes by saying that Israel “sat upon the bed.” This detail is significant because it highlights Jacob’s frailty and impending mortality. Jacob’s choice to sit on the bed suggests that he was too weak to stand and that he recognized his approaching death. It serves as a foreshadowing of the events that will unfold as Jacob imparts his blessings and prophecies to his descendants in the following verses.

Themes and Lessons:Genesis 48:2 conveys themes of restoration, reconciliation, and the fulfilment of God’s promises. The reunion between Jacob and Joseph after years of separation is a powerful illustration of God’s faithfulness. It reminds us that even when circumstances seem dire or relationships are strained, God can bring about restoration and reconciliation. It also highlights the importance of family bonds and the joy that comes from being reunited with loved ones.

Overall, Genesis 48:2 captures a significant moment in the narrative of Jacob’s life, where he receives news of Joseph’s arrival and prepares himself to meet his long-lost son. The verse offers insights into the emotional state of Jacob and foreshadows the blessings and prophecies that he will bestow upon Joseph’s sons in the subsequent verses.
