Genesis 49:27

Listen to this article

“Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil.”

This verse is part of Jacob’s blessing to his twelve sons before his death. Each son received a unique blessing that revealed something about their future or the future of their descendants. In this particular verse, Jacob is speaking about his youngest son, Benjamin.

Benjamin’s Character:The verse describes Benjamin’s character using the metaphor of a wolf. The term “ravin” in the KJV means to tear or snatch away as a predator. This suggests that Benjamin would have a fierce and aggressive nature, similar to that of a wolf. However, it’s important to note that this description is metaphorical and not a literal portrayal of Benjamin or his descendants.

Morning and Night:The verse further elaborates on Benjamin’s activities, stating that he will “devour the prey in the morning” and “divide the spoil at night.” This imagery suggests Benjamin’s success in battle or conflict. It portrays him as a strong warrior who is victorious and able to claim the spoils of war.

Historical Fulfillment:Historically, Benjamin’s tribe became known for their fierce warriors. During the time of the Judges and the early monarchy in Israel, the tribe of Benjamin produced notable warriors, including Ehud (Judges 3:15-30) and Saul, the first king of Israel (1 Samuel 9-11). Benjamin’s descendants were known for their military prowess and courage.

Spiritual Application:While this verse specifically refers to Benjamin and his descendants, we can also draw some spiritual lessons from it. Metaphorically, the image of a wolf can remind us of the need for discernment and vigilance in our spiritual lives. We should be watchful against false teachings and remain rooted in the truth of God’s Word.

Furthermore, the mention of dividing the spoil can remind us of the victories we can experience as believers in Christ. Through Jesus, we have been given the victory over sin and death. As we live in Christ’s strength and authority, we can claim the spiritual blessings and rewards that God has provided for us.

In conclusion, Genesis 49:27 provides insight into the character and future of Benjamin and his descendants. It portrays Benjamin as a fierce warrior and highlights the military prowess of his tribe. However, we can also find spiritual lessons in this verse, reminding us of the need for discernment and the victories we can experience through our faith in Christ.
