Exodus 1:11

Listen to this article

“Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.”

This verse is part of the account of the Israelites’ enslavement in Egypt. It describes the conditions under which the Israelites lived and the tasks they were forced to undertake.

Historical Context:Exodus is the second book of the Bible and recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. At this point in the narrative, Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, had risen to prominence in Egypt and brought his family to live there during a time of famine. Over time, a new Pharaoh came to power who did not know Joseph or acknowledge his contributions to Egypt.

Enslavement and Taskmasters:Exodus 1:11 highlights the oppression faced by the Israelites under the new Pharaoh’s rule. The verse states that taskmasters were appointed to afflict the Israelites with burdens. These taskmasters were Egyptian overseers who were responsible for supervising the labor of the Israelite slaves and ensuring their productivity.

The Israelites were subjected to hard labour and forced to build “treasure cities” for Pharaoh. Two of these cities mentioned in the verse are Pithom and Raamses. These cities were likely strategic locations or storehouses for Pharaoh’s wealth and possessions.

Significance:This verse sets the stage for the Israelites’ experience of bondage and their subsequent liberation by God through Moses. The harsh treatment and burdens imposed on the Israelites reveal the oppressive nature of their slavery. Their situation emphasizes the need for God’s intervention and the fulfillment of His promises to deliver them from their bondage.

It is important to note that the Bible consistently portrays God as a deliverer and a protector of the oppressed. The Israelites’ liberation from Egypt serves as a powerful illustration of God’s faithfulness and His concern for His people, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Overall, Exodus 1:11 provides insight into the historical context of the Israelites’ enslavement and sets the stage for the events that unfold in the subsequent chapters of Exodus. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and His ability to deliver His people from difficult circumstances.
