Exodus 3:7

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows.”

This verse is a significant part of the narrative where God appeared to Moses in the form of a burning bush and commissioned him to deliver the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. Here are some key points we can explore in this Bible study:

God’s Awareness and Compassion:In the beginning of Exodus 3:7, God acknowledges that He has seen the affliction of the Israelites in Egypt. This reveals God’s omniscience and His compassionate nature. Despite being enslaved and suffering under harsh taskmasters, God was not oblivious to their pain. He heard their cry for help, and He cared deeply about their well-being.

God’s Knowledge and Understanding:The verse goes on to say that God knew the sorrows of His people. God’s knowledge is not limited to mere awareness; it extends to a deep understanding of His people’s sufferings. This demonstrates God’s intimate knowledge of our individual circumstances and His ability to empathize with our pain. He knows our sorrows, struggles, and challenges, and He is not indifferent to them.

God’s Response and Intervention:The fact that God heard the cry of the Israelites and acknowledged their suffering was not without purpose. This verse sets the stage for God’s plan to deliver His people from bondage. In the following verses, God commissions Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. Exodus 3:7 reveals God’s heart for justice and His desire to intervene on behalf of His people, leading them to freedom.

Application to Our Lives:The message of Exodus 3:7 is not limited to the historical context of the Israelites’ slavery in Egypt. It also holds relevance for our lives today. We can take comfort in knowing that God sees and understands our afflictions and sorrows. He is not distant or indifferent but is actively involved in our lives. We can cry out to Him, knowing that He hears and cares for us. Just as God delivered the Israelites from their bondage, He is capable of delivering us from the various forms of bondage we may face, such as sin, addiction, or emotional turmoil.

In summary, Exodus 3:7 highlights God’s awareness, compassion, knowledge, and response to the affliction of His people. It reminds us of His desire to deliver us from bondage and His ability to understand our struggles. This verse encourages us to turn to God in our times of need, knowing that He hears our cries and is ready to act on our behalf.
