Exodus 4:4

Posted on 2 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the Lord said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of Moses and the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In this particular verse, Moses has encountered God through the burning bush and is receiving instructions from God about his mission to deliver the Israelites.

Symbolism of the serpent:In this verse, God instructs Moses to put forth his hand and take hold of the serpent by its tail. The serpent in this context represents the staff or rod of Moses. This was a common symbol in ancient Egyptian culture, and Moses would have been familiar with it since he grew up in the Egyptian palace.

Demonstrating God’s power:The transformation of the serpent into a rod is a demonstration of God’s power and authority. By turning the serpent into a rod, God is showing Moses that He can take something seemingly dangerous and harmful and turn it into a useful tool. It is a tangible sign of God’s ability to work through Moses and perform miracles.

The significance of the rod:Throughout the book of Exodus, Moses’ rod plays a crucial role in the miracles and signs that God performs. It is used to initiate the plagues upon Egypt, part the Red Sea, and strike the rock for water, among other things. The rod becomes a symbol of God’s presence and authority working through Moses.

Lessons for us:This verse reminds us that God can transform and use the ordinary things in our lives for His purposes. Just as Moses’ rod was transformed into a tool of power, God can take our weaknesses, fears, and limitations and use them for His glory. It also teaches us to trust and obey God’s instructions, even when they seem unusual or challenging. Moses had to exercise faith and obedience to stretch out his hand and take hold of the serpent, and when he did, he witnessed God’s miraculous power.

In conclusion, Exodus 4:4 showcases God’s power to transform and use ordinary objects for His purposes. It serves as a reminder for us to trust in God’s ability to work through our weaknesses and to faithfully obey His instructions.
