Exodus 6:2

Listen to this article

“And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD.”

This verse is part of the narrative in the book of Exodus, which recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt. In this particular verse, God speaks directly to Moses, revealing His name to him.

Context:Prior to Exodus 6:2, Moses had been called by God at the burning bush (Exodus 3) to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. However, Moses faced resistance, both from Pharaoh and the Israelites themselves. In Exodus 5, Pharaoh increased the Israelites’ workload, and the people were discouraged. Moses, feeling the weight of his task, questioned God about His plan and why He had not yet delivered His people.

Divine Revelation:In response to Moses’ questioning, God reaffirms His presence and His covenant with the Israelites. By revealing His name, God provides a deeper understanding of His character and establishes a personal connection with Moses.

“I am the LORD”: The name God reveals to Moses is “the LORD” (YHWH in Hebrew), often translated as “Yahweh” or “Jehovah.” This name is significant because it signifies God’s self-existence and eternal nature. It reflects God’s divine nature as the “I AM WHO I AM,” emphasizing His unchanging, sovereign, and self-sufficient nature.

Significance:By revealing His name as “the LORD,” God assures Moses that He is the same God who had made covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Exodus 3:6). God’s declaration of His name emphasizes His faithfulness, power, and authority in fulfilling His promises to deliver the Israelites and bring them into the Promised Land.

Application:Exodus 6:2 reminds us that God’s character remains constant throughout time. Just as God reassured Moses with His name, we can find comfort and confidence in our relationship with Him. The name “the LORD” reveals God as our trustworthy and unchanging source of guidance, provision, and deliverance. It encourages us to place our faith in Him, even in times of doubt or uncertainty.

In summary, Exodus 6:2 is a pivotal verse in the book of Exodus, where God reveals His name to Moses and reassures him of His faithfulness and power. It reminds us of God’s unchanging character and invites us to trust in Him in all circumstances.
