Exodus 6:19

And the sons of Merari; Mahali and Mushi: these are the families of Levi according to their generations.

Exodus 6:19 (KJV)

The book of Exodus tells how God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In chapter 6, God speaks to Moses and reassures him of His plan to free the people. This verse appears in a list of the descendants of Levi, the third son of Jacob. The list is part of a larger record that traces the families of Israel, showing how God was preserving His people even while they suffered in bondage.

Merari was one of the three sons of Levi, along with Gershon and Kohath. His sons were Mahli and Mushi. These names represent the families or clans that came from Merari. The verse says these are the families of Levi according to their generations, meaning it records the official family lines of the tribe. Such genealogies were important in Israel because they identified each family’s role in religious life.

The same family line appears in 1 Chronicles 6:19, which confirms that Mahli and Mushi were the sons of Merari. This shows the careful way God preserved the records of His people. The Levites were set apart to serve in the tabernacle and later the temple. They cared for the sacred objects, offered sacrifices, and taught the Law to the people. Their service was central to Israel’s worship. The unity and diversity within the tribe remind us that different families had distinct roles, yet all were part of the larger priestly service.

This verse reminds us that God knows every family and every person. Even a simple list of names shows that God values each individual and has a place for them in His plan. Just as the Levites were chosen for a special purpose, believers in Christ are called to be a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). We are to offer spiritual sacrifices to God (Romans 12:1) and serve Him faithfully in our daily lives.

The different families within the tribe of Levi show the diversity of roles in God’s work. Each person has unique gifts and functions, yet all are united in service to God. We should appreciate the varied contributions of fellow believers as we work together for His glory.

God’s faithfulness is seen in how He preserved the lineage of His people through generations. He works through specific families and ordinary people to accomplish His redemptive purposes. Consider how your own family line and calling are known to God. He sees you and has a purpose for your life, just as He had a purpose for Mahli and Mushi.
