Exodus 10:25
And Moses saide, Thou must giue vs also sacrifices, and burnt offerings, that we may sacrifice vnto the Lord our God. Exodus 10:25 (KJV)
This verse is part of the narrative of the plagues that were sent upon Egypt as a result of Pharaoh’s refusal to let the Israelites go. During the plague of locusts, Moses was negotiating with Pharaoh on behalf of the Israelites, and the tenth plague, the death of the firstborn, was imminent.
Intercession and Worship: In this verse Moses requests that Pharaoh allow the Israelites to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings to the Lord their God. The request highlights the importance of intercession and worship in the life of believers, showing Moses’ understanding that presenting offerings is a vital act of worship to God.
Recognition of God’s Authority: By asking Pharaoh for permission to worship, Moses acknowledges Pharaoh’s earthly authority while affirming that the ultimate authority belongs to the Lord God. This reflects Moses’ determination to obey God’s command and to demonstrate the Israelites’ allegiance to their true God.
Freedom to Worship: Pharaoh had initially resisted letting the Israelites go, denying them the opportunity to worship God freely. Moses’ insistence that true worship requires sacrifices and burnt offerings asserts the Israelites’ need for freedom to worship their God and their commitment to obeying His instructions.
Foreshadowing the Exodus: The request for sacrifices and burnt offerings not only expresses worship but also foreshadows the upcoming Exodus. Sacrifices and offerings would become integral to the Israelites’ journey out of Egypt, as detailed later in the instructions for the Passover lamb and other rites that would shape worship in the wilderness and the Promised Land.
Application:
Importance of Worship: Just as Moses recognized the necessity of worship through sacrifices, believers should prioritize worship in their lives. Worship extends beyond formal rituals to include living as an offering to God through prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and obedience.
Freedom to Worship: We should be grateful for the freedom to worship God without hindrance, cherishing and protecting this privilege, especially for those who face restrictions worldwide.
Surrendering to God’s Authority: Like Moses, we must submit to God’s sovereignty, aligning our will with His and faithfully following His commands even amid opposition.
The Sacrifice of Christ: The request for animal sacrifices points forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the perfect Lamb who atoned for sin once for all. As New Testament believers, we find salvation and reconciliation through faith in Christ’s sacrifice rather than through animal offerings.
Studying Exodus 10:25 in its broader context deepens our understanding of worship, authority, and the foreshadowing of Christ’s redemptive work.
