Exodus 11:6
And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
Exodus 11:6 (KJV)
Context
The book of Exodus tells how God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. In this verse, God speaks to Moses, foretelling the final plague He will bring upon Egypt: the death of the firstborn. This was the last and most severe of the ten plagues, the decisive act that compelled Pharaoh to let the people go. It was the culmination of God’s demonstration of power and His determination to secure Israel’s release.
Meaning
The phrase “great cry” describes the intense mourning and anguish that would fill Egypt. Parents would lose firstborn sons, children would lose elder brothers, and households would lose their principal members. The cry would echo throughout the entire land, showing that no family would escape this devastating event.
God states that this cry would be like none before and none to come. This emphasizes the unique severity of the plague and the unparalleled grief it would bring. It underlines the finality and magnitude of the judgment, leaving an indelible mark on Egypt. The unprecedented nature of the cry serves as a sobering reminder of the reality of divine judgment and the seriousness of sin.
Biblical connections
This prophecy was fulfilled in Exodus 12:29-30, where the death of the firstborn and the resulting “great cry” are explicitly recorded. That fulfillment confirms the accuracy of God’s word to Moses and His faithfulness to carry out what He has declared. The plague also demonstrated God’s sovereignty and the certainty of His word, as the prophecy was fulfilled exactly as spoken.
Application
This verse reminds us of God’s justice and the consequences of disobedience. It emphasizes the importance of listening to and obeying God’s word. It also reveals God’s compassion for His people, for He delivered them from bondage and protected them during His judgments.
The distinction between Egypt and Israel is striking. While Egypt suffered, the Israelites were spared, demonstrating God’s faithfulness to His covenant. This calls us to trust in His promises and to take seriously the reality of divine judgment. God’s power to save and His mercy toward those who trust in Him are clearly seen in this event.
Reflection
Exodus 11:6 reveals the magnitude and uniqueness of the final plague, emphasizing God’s sovereignty, justice, and faithfulness. It prompts us to examine our response to God’s commands and to rest in His power to save those who trust in Him.
