Exodus 12:10

And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

Context

This verse belongs to God’s instructions for the first Passover, given on the night before Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt. The people were to roast the Passover lamb whole and eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, ready to leave at dawn. The command about leftovers was part of this urgent preparation. God was about to act, and Israel needed to be ready to move at once.

Meaning

The word “it” refers to the Passover lamb. God told the Israelites to let nothing of the lamb remain until morning. This command stressed the immediacy of the meal; they were to consume it completely and promptly. If any portion remained, they were to burn it with fire. Burning the remainder showed that the lamb was a holy offering, not common food to be kept or wasted. The fire set it apart completely for the Lord.

Biblical connections

The same regulation appears in Numbers 9:12, where the later observance of Passover repeats that none of the lamb should be left until morning and no bone should be broken. This repetition shows how essential this rule was to the feast. The verse also points to Christ, the Lamb of God. Just as the Passover lamb was to be wholly consumed, Christ is to be received fully by faith, in His complete person and work, not partially or selectively. He gave Himself entirely for us.

Application

This verse teaches prompt obedience. The Israelites ate in haste, ready to follow God’s leading. Believers today are called to respond to God’s deliverance with similar urgency and readiness. The command against leftovers also underscores complete reliance on God’s provision. His supply is abundant and sufficient, so there is no need to cling to what He gives for tomorrow. Burning the remainder reminds us to treat sacred things with reverence, not casually. We must not treat the sacrifice of Christ as ordinary or keep part of our lives from Him.

Reflection

Consider whether you receive Christ wholly or selectively. Do you trust Him for salvation but hold back areas of your life? The Passover lamb could not be kept for later; it was to be fully embraced. This verse warns against spiritual complacency and treating holy things as ordinary. It calls you to accept God’s provision completely and promptly, living in readiness for His purposes.
