Exodus 13:8

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt.”

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey towards the Promised Land. In this verse, God commands the Israelites to teach their children about the significance of the events that took place during the Exodus.

Passing on the Testimony:God emphasizes the importance of passing on the knowledge and understanding of His acts to future generations. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that their children know and remember what the Lord has done. This passage highlights the duty of parents to teach their children about God’s faithfulness and deliverance.

God’s Deliverance:The phrase “that which the LORD did unto me” refers to God’s miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. God displayed His power through the ten plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and the subsequent destruction of Pharaoh’s army. The Israelites were witnesses to these extraordinary events, and God wanted them to remember and communicate this deliverance to their children.

Personal Connection:Notice that the verse says, “This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me.” God wanted each individual to have a personal connection with the Exodus. He desired that they see themselves as direct beneficiaries of His mighty acts. By recounting the story and making it personal, they could understand their identity as a chosen and delivered people.

Application:This verse has relevance for believers today. We are called to pass on our faith experiences and the stories of God’s work in our lives to the next generation. Just as the Israelites were instructed to teach their children about the Exodus, we should share with our children, family, and friends how God has worked in our lives, demonstrating His faithfulness, provision, and deliverance.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness:Reflecting on the Lord’s past acts strengthens our faith and encourages us in present challenges. It reminds us that the same God who delivered the Israelites from Egypt is the same God who walks with us today. By sharing these stories, we cultivate a sense of gratitude and a confident trust in God’s ability to act on our behalf.

In summary, Exodus 13:8 emphasizes the importance of passing on the knowledge of God’s acts and deliverance to future generations. We should teach our children, families, and friends about the ways in which God has worked in our lives, reminding them of His faithfulness and encouraging them in their own faith journeys. Remembering God’s past acts of deliverance helps us trust in His power and provision in our present circumstances.
