Exodus 13:19

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.”

Historical Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their subsequent journey to the Promised Land. After the ten plagues and the Passover, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. Exodus 13:19 occurs during their journey in the wilderness.

The Significance of Bones:In this verse, we see Moses taking the bones of Joseph with him. This action is significant because it fulfils a promise made by Joseph to his brothers and the Israelites in Genesis 50:25. Before his death, Joseph told his brothers, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here” (Genesis 50:25). By taking Joseph’s bones with them, the Israelites honoured this promise and demonstrated their faith in God’s future fulfilment of His promises to them.

Joseph’s Promise:Joseph’s request to have his bones carried out of Egypt reveals his unwavering faith in God’s promises. He believed that God would indeed visit the Israelites and lead them to the land promised to their ancestors. Joseph’s request was not merely a sentimental act; it signified his hope in God’s faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Trusting in God’s Promise:The act of carrying Joseph’s bones served as a visual reminder for the Israelites that they were on a journey of faith. It reinforced their trust in God’s promises and His ability to fulfil them. By fulfilling Joseph’s request, the Israelites demonstrated their obedience to God’s commandments and their commitment to follow His lead.

Lessons for Today:Exodus 13:19 teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it emphasises the significance of honouring promises and commitments. Joseph’s request was upheld even after many years had passed, highlighting the importance of keeping our word. Secondly, it reminds us of the value of faith and trust in God’s promises. The Israelites’ act of carrying Joseph’s bones demonstrates their confidence in God’s faithfulness. Lastly, this verse encourages us to remember God’s faithfulness in our own lives and to hold steadfastly to His promises, even in challenging circumstances.

In summary, Exodus 13:19 recounts Moses’ fulfilment of Joseph’s request to carry his bones out of Egypt. This act symbolises the Israelites’ trust in God’s promises and serves as a reminder for us to honour commitments and maintain faith in God’s faithfulness.
