Exodus 14:7

Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them.”

Context:Exodus 14 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Exodus, recounting the miraculous events surrounding the Israelites’ escape from Egypt. The Israelites had been enslaved in Egypt for several generations, and God raised up Moses as their leader to deliver them from bondage. In this verse, Pharaoh mobilises his army, consisting of six hundred chosen chariots and all the chariots of Egypt, along with captains leading each of them, in pursuit of the Israelites who had left Egypt.

Key Points:

  • Pharaoh’s Pursuit:After allowing the Israelites to leave Egypt following a series of devastating plagues, Pharaoh’s heart hardened again, and he regretted his decision to let them go. Filled with anger and a desire to regain control over his slave workforce, Pharaoh mobilised his army to chase after the Israelites. The verse highlights the strength of Pharaoh’s forces, which included six hundred chosen chariots. Chariots were the most advanced military technology of the time and were a symbol of power and military might.
  • God’s Sovereignty:Despite the impressive strength of Pharaoh’s army, this verse, along with the events that follow, emphasises God’s ultimate control and sovereignty over human affairs. The pursuit of the Israelites by Pharaoh’s army was part of God’s plan to display His power and deliver the Israelites in a miraculous way. God was about to demonstrate His authority and supremacy over the false gods of Egypt, as well as over the mightiest military force of the time.
  • Faith and Fear:Exodus 14:7 captures a significant moment in the Israelites’ journey. As they saw Pharaoh’s army approaching, fear and panic filled their hearts. They were caught between the advancing army and the Red Sea, which appeared to be an insurmountable obstacle. This verse highlights the contrast between the Israelites’ fear and the apparent strength of the Egyptian army. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the Israelites and the need for them to trust in God’s faithfulness and power, even when circumstances seemed overwhelming.
  • Foreshadowing of Salvation:This verse foreshadows the miraculous deliverance that God would provide for the Israelites in the following verses. Despite the seeming hopelessness of the situation, God would part the waters of the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to cross on dry ground, while bringing destruction upon Pharaoh’s pursuing army. This event became a pivotal moment in Israel’s history, demonstrating God’s faithfulness to His promises and His ability to rescue His people from seemingly impossible situations.

Application:

  • Trusting God in Difficult Circumstances:Like the Israelites, we often find ourselves facing challenging situations that seem insurmountable. Exodus 14:7 reminds us that even in the face of overwhelming odds, we can trust in God’s sovereignty and power. He is able to make a way where there seems to be no way.
  • Overcoming Fear:The Israelites’ fear in the face of Pharaoh’s army is a reminder of how fear can paralyse us and prevent us from moving forward. We are encouraged to place our trust in God, knowing that He is greater than any fear or obstacle we may encounter.
  • God’s Deliverance:The events that unfolded after Exodus 14:7 highlight God’s ability to save His people. As believers, we can take comfort in knowing that God is our deliverer. He has the power to rescue us from any situation, and His timing and methods are perfect.

Recognising God’s Sovereignty:This verse reminds us of God’s ultimate control over the affairs of this world. Even when it appears that the forces against us are strong, we can trust that God is in control and working all things for His purposes.

In summary, Exodus 14:7 showcases Pharaoh’s pursuit of the Israelites with a formidable army, setting the stage for the miraculous events that follow. It reminds us to trust in God’s sovereignty, overcome fear through faith, and rely on His deliverance in challenging circumstances.
