Posted on 3 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord.”

Context:Exodus 14 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Exodus. It describes the account of the Israelites’ escape from Egypt, led by Moses, after being held in bondage for generations. In this verse, the Israelites find themselves in a perilous situation, with Pharaoh’s army pursuing them and the Red Sea blocking their escape route.

Fear and Desperation:The verse begins with the children of Israel lifting up their eyes and seeing the Egyptians approaching. Their immediate response is fear, and they become “sore afraid.” The Israelites were trapped between the pursuing Egyptian army and the vast expanse of the Red Sea, seemingly with no way out. Their fear is understandable given the overwhelming circumstances.

Crying Out to the Lord:In their distress, the children of Israel cry out to the Lord for help. This is an important aspect of their faith and relationship with God. Despite their fear and desperation, they turn to the Lord, acknowledging their dependence on Him and seeking His intervention. Their cry to the Lord reflects their trust in His power and ability to deliver them from their enemies.

Trusting in God’s Deliverance:The Israelites’ cry to the Lord demonstrates their faith in His ability to save them. Though their situation seems hopeless from a human perspective, they know that their hope lies in God’s faithfulness and His promises to deliver them from bondage. This moment highlights the Israelites’ reliance on God’s provision and their expectation that He will act on their behalf.

Application:Exodus 14:10 serves as a reminder to trust in God during challenging and overwhelming circumstances. Like the Israelites, we may face situations where we feel trapped or pursued by enemies or difficulties. In such moments, it is crucial to lift our eyes to the Lord, cry out to Him, and place our trust in His power to deliver us. God is our refuge and strength, and He is faithful to hear our cries and provide a way out, even when it seems impossible.

In summary, Exodus 14:10 illustrates the Israelites’ fear and desperation when confronted with the pursuing Egyptian army. However, it also highlights their faith and trust in God as they cry out to Him for deliverance. This verse serves as a reminder for us to turn to God in times of trouble, trusting in His power and provision to guide us and provide a way forward.
