Listen to this article

The enemie said, I will pursue, I wil ouertake, I wil diuide the spoile: my lust shall be satisfied vpon them: I will draw my sword, mine hand shall destroy them. Exodus 15:9 (KJV)

Context: Exodus 15:9 is part of the Song of Moses, a celebratory hymn sung by Moses and the Israelites after they witnessed God’s deliverance and the drowning of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. This song responds to God’s victory and the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

The Enemy’s Boast: In this verse, the enemy—understood to be the Egyptians—speaks in the past tense, declaring that they have already defeated the Israelites and urging a retreat from the presence of the LORD. Their words reveal arrogance and confidence just before God turns the tide against them.

God’s Sovereignty: This verse highlights the stark contrast between the enemy’s boastful declaration and the reality of God’s intervention. While the Egyptians claim triumph, the following verses describe how God hurls the waters back over the pursuing forces, destroying them. The passage underscores God’s supreme power to frustrate the plans of those who oppose Him and His people.

Lessons for Believers:

God’s Power and Protection: Exodus 15:9 reminds us of God’s ability to protect His people despite the threats and schemes of the enemy. Believers can take comfort in knowing that God is greater than any opposition we face and is able to intervene on our behalf.

Trusting God’s Plan: The verse serves as a reminder that human boasting and plans are futile compared to God’s sovereign will. It teaches the importance of trusting in God’s plan and timing rather than relying on our own strength or abilities. Just as God delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians, He continues to guide and deliver His people today.

Humility and Dependence: The arrogance displayed by the enemy contrasts with the humility and dependence that God desires from His people. We are called to submit to God, acknowledge His authority, and rely on His strength. The downfall of the Egyptians warns against pride and self‑reliance.

In conclusion, Exodus 15:9 captures the enemy’s boast before their defeat at the hands of God. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty, His power to protect His people, and the importance of trusting in His plan. As believers, we are called to humility and dependence on God rather than relying on our own strength.
