Exodus 16:15

Listen to this article

“And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.”

This verse is part of the account of the Israelites’ journey through the wilderness after their liberation from slavery in Egypt. They had been traveling for about a month and were experiencing hunger and complaining to Moses and Aaron about the lack of food. In response to their complaints, God promised to send bread from heaven to sustain them.

When the Israelites woke up one morning, they found a thin, flaky substance covering the ground. They did not recognise it and asked one another what it was. The Hebrew word for “What is it?” is “manna,” which is where the name of the bread came from.

Moses explained to them that the manna was the bread that the Lord had provided for them to eat:It was a miraculous provision from God to sustain the Israelites during their journey in the wilderness. The manna had specific instructions regarding how much each person should gather, and it had to be gathered daily, except for the Sabbath day when they were to collect double the amount.

The account of the manna serves as a significant lesson in God’s faithfulness and provision. It demonstrates that God cares for His people and provides for their needs, even in challenging circumstances. The Israelites had to rely on God’s daily provision and trust that He would provide for them each day.

In the New Testament, Jesus referred to Himself as the “bread of life” in John 6:35, drawing on the imagery of the manna in the wilderness. He explained that just as the manna provided physical sustenance for the Israelites, He, as the bread of life, provides spiritual sustenance and eternal life for all who believe in Him.

In summary is removed from this paragraph as per instructions: Exodus 16:15 highlights the miraculous provision of manna by God during the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness and His ability to provide for our needs. Additionally, it foreshadows Jesus’ role as the ultimate provider of eternal life and spiritual nourishment.
