Exodus 16:25

And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field.

Context

In Exodus 16, the Israelites had recently left slavery in Egypt and were traveling through the wilderness. They complained about hunger, so God gave them manna, a supernatural food that appeared each morning. On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much, and Moses told them to keep it for the Sabbath.

Meaning

Moses tells the people to eat the manna they had kept, because that day is a Sabbath to the LORD. The word Sabbath means rest. It was a holy day set apart for worship and honor to God. No manna would appear in the field, so the people had to trust that the extra portion from the previous day was enough. This command also taught them to depend on God’s daily provision and to obey His instructions precisely.

Biblical connections

The command to rest on the seventh day connects to the fourth commandment in Exodus 20:8-11, where God ordered His people to remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. The manna itself points to Jesus Christ, who called Himself the bread of life in John 6:35. Just as Israel depended on manna for physical strength, believers depend on Christ for spiritual life. The Sabbath rest also foreshadows the deeper rest found in Him, as Hebrews 4:9-10 explains.

Application

This verse teaches us to trust God’s provision. The Israelites could not gather food on the Sabbath, so they had to rely on what God had already given. In the same way, we can rest from our daily work and trust that God will supply our needs. Honoring the Sabbath means setting aside time to worship and remember that our security comes from Him, not from our own effort. It is a deliberate act of faith, acknowledging that God is faithful to provide for His people.

The Sabbath and the manna remind us that God is faithful. He provided for His people in the wilderness, and He provides for us today. When we rest in Him, we acknowledge that He is our Provider and that our true rest is found in Christ.
