Exodus 16:33

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

"And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations."

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. After their departure from Egypt, the Israelites faced challenges in the wilderness, including hunger. In Exodus 16, God provides manna, a supernatural bread-like substance, to sustain them.

The Provision of Manna:In this verse, Moses instructs his brother Aaron to take a pot and fill it with an omer of manna. This command signifies the importance of preserving a portion of the manna for future generations as a reminder of God’s miraculous provision during their wilderness journey. The omer was a measurement equivalent to about two quarts or two litres.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God’s Provision:The manna was a visible sign of God’s provision for the Israelites’ physical needs. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness and care for His people, even in difficult circumstances. As believers, we can trust that God will provide for our needs as well (Matthew 6:31-33).
  • God’s Instructions:Moses’ instruction to Aaron emphasizes the importance of following God’s commands. It is essential to obey God’s instructions and not neglect them. Just as the Israelites were to gather and preserve the manna according to God’s guidance, we should be attentive to God’s Word and faithfully follow His teachings.
  • Historical Remembrance:The preservation of manna for future generations highlights the significance of remembering God’s faithfulness and the stories of His miraculous works. It serves as a reminder to future generations of how God provided for the Israelites in the wilderness. We, too, should remember and pass down the accounts of God’s faithfulness to inspire and encourage others in their faith journey.
  • Christological Symbolism:In the New Testament, Jesus refers to Himself as the bread of life (John 6:35). The manna in the wilderness is a foreshadowing of Jesus, who provides spiritual nourishment and sustenance for our souls. Just as the manna was necessary for physical survival, we need Jesus for our spiritual life and eternal salvation.

Application:

  • Gratitude for Provision:Reflect on God’s provision in your life, both physically and spiritually. Take time to thank Him for His faithfulness and care.
  • Obedience to God’s Word:Seek to faithfully follow God’s instructions and teachings. Study the Bible, meditate on His Word, and apply its principles in your daily life.
  • Remember God’s Faithfulness:Recall the instances where God has provided for you in the past. Share these stories with others, particularly the younger generation, to inspire and encourage them in their faith.
  • Embrace Jesus as the Bread of Life:Recognise Jesus as the ultimate source of spiritual sustenance and salvation. Trust in Him and seek a deeper relationship with Him through prayer, studying the Bible, and participating in the sacraments.

Remember that this Bible study is just a starting point, and there are many more insights and applications that can be drawn from Exodus 16:33.
