Exodus 17:10

Listen to this article

“So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.”

This verse is part of the account of the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness after their liberation from slavery in Egypt. It depicts a significant event that took place during their time in the desert.

The passage describes a battle between the Israelites, led by Joshua, and the Amalekites. However, the focus of this study will be on the actions of Moses, Aaron, and Hur as they ascended to the top of the hill.

Context:To better understand this verse, we must consider the context leading up to it. In Exodus 17:8-9, the Amalekites attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Joshua was chosen to lead the Israelite army into battle.

Moses’ role:In verse 9, Moses instructed Joshua to choose men and engage in battle against the Amalekites. However, Moses didn’t lead the battle himself. Instead, he assumed a different role.

Moses, Aaron, and Hur:While Joshua fought on the battlefield, Moses, along with Aaron and Hur, went up to the top of the hill. This indicates that their purpose was different from that of Joshua and the fighting men.

Spiritual significance:Moses, Aaron, and Hur’s ascent to the top of the hill symbolises their engagement in a different type of warfare. They engaged in spiritual warfare through intercession and support.

Intercession:Moses’ ascent to the hilltop signifies his act of intercession on behalf of Joshua and the Israelites. As he raised his hands to God, he interceded for victory in the battle. This action demonstrates the spiritual power of prayer and reliance on God’s intervention.

Aaron and Hur:The presence of Aaron and Hur alongside Moses emphasises the communal aspect of intercession. They provided physical support to Moses by holding up his hands when they became weary. This action illustrates the importance of supporting and encouraging one another in times of spiritual battle.

Victory through intercession:As Moses held up his hands, the Israelites prevailed in battle. However, when he grew tired and lowered his hands, the Amalekites gained the upper hand. This showcases the direct connection between Moses’ intercession and the outcome of the battle.

Lessons for believers:Exodus 17:10 teaches us several valuable lessons. It underscores the significance of intercessory prayer, both on an individual and communal level. It demonstrates the power of relying on God’s intervention rather than solely depending on human efforts. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of mutual support and encouragement within the community of believers.
