Exodus 17:12

Listen to this article

“But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”

Exodus 17:12 recounts a significant event that occurred during the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness after their escape from Egypt. This passage takes place during a battle between the Israelites, led by Joshua, and the Amalekites.

The narrative describes Moses’ role in the battle. As the battle progressed, Moses stood on top of a hill overlooking the battlefield, holding up the staff of God in his hands. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites would prevail, but whenever he lowered them, the Amalekites would gain the upper hand.

However, Moses grew tired, and his hands became heavy. Recognizing the importance of Moses’ posture, Aaron and Hur, two companions of Moses, took a stone and helped Moses sit on it. They then stood on either side of Moses, supporting his hands in an elevated position until the sun set.

This incident holds several valuable lessons and spiritual insights:

  • Interdependence and Unity:Aaron and Hur recognized the significance of supporting Moses and ensuring that his hands remained raised. Their actions exemplify the importance of unity, teamwork, and assisting one another in accomplishing God’s purposes. Together, they formed a united front, symbolizing the strength found in community.
  • The Power of Prayer and Intercession:Moses’ outstretched hands were not merely a physical posture but also a symbolic gesture of prayer and intercession on behalf of the Israelites. The victory of the Israelites in the battle was directly tied to Moses’ prayerful posture. It emphasizes the effectiveness and power of intercessory prayer in overcoming spiritual battles and challenges.
  • Endurance and Perseverance:Moses’ fatigue during the battle highlights the significance of endurance and perseverance in the face of trials. Though his hands grew heavy, he did not give up. Aaron and Hur’s support allowed Moses to sustain his posture until the battle was won. This teaches us the importance of persevering in prayer and not growing weary in doing God’s work.
  • The Sovereignty of God:Ultimately, the victory of the Israelites did not solely depend on Moses’ hands or the support of Aaron and Hur. It was God who granted them success in battle. The text reminds us that victory comes from the Lord, and our trust and reliance should be placed in Him.

Overall, Exodus 17:12 highlights the importance of unity, intercession, perseverance, and trust in God. It teaches us to come alongside and support one another in spiritual battles, recognizing that our ultimate victory rests in God’s hands.
