1 Chronicles 6:75
“And Hukok with her suburbs, and Rehob with her suburbs:”
God’s Provision for His Servants
The Book of 1 Chronicles meticulously records the inheritance given to the tribes of Israel, including the unique provision made for the tribe of Levi. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites were not given a single contiguous geographical territory. Instead, God dispersed them throughout the nation, granting them specific cities along with their surrounding pasturelands, translated in the King James Version as "suburbs." These lands, including Hukok and Rehob, were essential. They provided the space necessary for the Levites to keep their livestock and sustain their daily livelihood, freeing them to minister to the spiritual needs of the people. This arrangement stands as a beautiful picture of God's practical care, ensuring that those called to His service were sustained among their brethren.
Faithfulness Over Earthly Comfort
While these designated cities and suburbs represented a profound blessing, a later crisis in Israel's history revealed the true devotion of the Levites. Following the reign of King Solomon, the kingdom divided, and Jeroboam led the northern tribes into devastating spiritual compromise. He established false idols and rejected the Levites from functioning in their appointed priestly duties. Faced with widespread national apostasy, the Levites were forced to make a costly decision.
Choosing faithfulness to the Lord over their material security, they abandoned their inherited lands—the very suburbs and pasturelands detailed in these biblical records. They migrated south to Judah and Jerusalem, where the true worship of God was maintained at the temple. This migration is a powerful demonstration of spiritual priority. The Levites recognized that while the pasturelands were a gracious gift, the Lord Himself was their ultimate portion. Their willingness to forsake earthly comfort rather than compromise their devotion remains a profound example today, prompting believers to consider what they might be willing to leave behind to pursue wholehearted faithfulness to God.
