Exodus 18:20

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.”

This verse is part of a larger passage where Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, visits him in the wilderness after the Israelites’ deliverance from Egypt. Jethro observes Moses’ role as the sole judge and counselor for the people, and he offers him advice on how to delegate his responsibilities effectively. In verse 20, Jethro provides specific instructions on how Moses should carry out his duties as a leader and judge.

Teach them ordinances and laws:Here, Moses is instructed to impart God’s ordinances and laws to the Israelites. These were the commandments and regulations given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai, which included the Ten Commandments and various other statutes. Moses had a responsibility to teach and make known these laws to the people, ensuring they understood how to live according to God’s standards.

Show them the way wherein they must walk:Moses was also tasked with guiding the Israelites in the way they should walk. This not only refers to physical paths but also encompasses the idea of a moral and spiritual journey. As the leader, Moses was to provide direction and help the people understand God’s will, leading them in righteousness and obedience to God’s commandments.

The work that they must do:Moses was to instruct the people regarding the work they were to do. This could include their responsibilities in terms of worship, sacrifices, building the tabernacle, and maintaining their community. It emphasizes the importance of order, organization, and personal accountability within the Israelite community.

From this verse, we can derive a few timeless principles that are relevant for us today:

  • Teaching and sharing God’s Word:As followers of God, we are called to teach and share His ordinances and laws. We have the responsibility to pass on the knowledge of God’s commands and principles to others, helping them understand the right way to live and guiding them towards a deeper relationship with God.
  • Providing guidance and direction:Just as Moses was instructed to show the Israelites the way they should walk, we should also strive to provide guidance to those around us. Whether it’s through mentoring, counseling, or simply being a source of encouragement, we can help others navigate life’s challenges and make decisions that align with God’s Word.
  • Encouraging diligent and purposeful work:The instruction to teach the people the work they must do reminds us of the importance of diligence and purpose in our endeavors. As Christians, we have various roles and responsibilities within our families, communities, and churches. We should approach our work with a sense of commitment, recognizing that our actions can bring glory to God and contribute to the well-being of others.

In summary, Exodus 18:20 highlights Moses’ role as a leader and judge, providing us with valuable insights on teaching God’s Word, offering guidance, and encouraging diligent work. These principles can inspire us to be faithful stewards of God’s truth, supporting and guiding others on their spiritual journey while fulfilling our own God-given responsibilities.
