Exodus 19:11

Posted on 4 August 2023
Listen to this article

"And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai."

Context:The book of Exodus recounts the story of the Israelites’ deliverance from slavery in Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. In Exodus 19, the Israelites have arrived at Mount Sinai, and God is preparing to make a covenant with them.

The Preparation:Prior to the events described in Exodus 19:11, God had instructed Moses to consecrate the people and have them wash their clothes, indicating the need for purity and readiness. The people were to prepare themselves physically and spiritually for a significant encounter with the Lord.

The Third Day:In this verse, God tells Moses to have the people ready by the third day because that is when the Lord would come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. The third day signifies a specific time frame for the people’s anticipation and preparation for the divine encounter.

The Manifestation of God:The Lord’s descent upon Mount Sinai was a powerful manifestation of His presence and glory. The people would witness a unique and awe-inspiring event that demonstrated God’s direct involvement in their lives and His faithfulness to His covenant promises.

Significance:This verse highlights the holiness and transcendence of God. Mount Sinai became a sacred space where God would reveal Himself and establish a covenant with His people. It also emphasizes the importance of being spiritually prepared and attentive to God’s presence.

  • Spiritual Preparation:Just as the Israelites were instructed to prepare themselves physically and spiritually, we are also called to prepare our hearts and minds when approaching God. This involves repentance, prayer, and seeking a close relationship with Him.
  • Awe and Reverence:Exodus 19:11 reminds us of God’s majesty and the importance of approaching Him with reverence. We should never take His presence for granted but recognize the privilege and honor it is to commune with Him.
  • Covenant Relationship:The events at Mount Sinai laid the foundation for the covenant between God and His people. As Christians, we have entered into a new covenant through Jesus Christ. We should live in light of this covenant, honoring God’s commandments and seeking to fulfill His purposes.
