Jeremiah Chapter 20

Summery

Chapter 20 of the Book of Jeremiah in the King James Version (KJV) depicts the prophet’s personal anguish and struggle as he faces opposition and persecution for delivering God’s messages. Jeremiah is beaten and imprisoned by Pashur, a priest and chief governor of the temple. In response, Jeremiah expresses his deep frustration and reproaches God, feeling deceived and mocked by the task of being a prophet.

Despite his internal turmoil, Jeremiah cannot contain the divine message within him. The word of God becomes like a burning fire within him, compelling him to continue speaking forth God’s judgments and pronouncements, even in the face of intense opposition.

Jeremiah also vents his frustration, cursing the day he was born and lamenting the fact that he has become a laughingstock. He feels abandoned by friends and family who now regard him with contempt.

In the end, Jeremiah acknowledges his dependence on God and expresses his trust in the Lord’s righteousness, seeking deliverance from his enemies. He resolves to wait upon God for vindication and expresses confidence in the ultimate triumph of God’s truth.
