Exodus 25:23

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood: two cubits shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.”

Context:The book of Exodus records the journey of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. In this particular verse, God instructs Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary for worship during their wilderness wanderings.

The Table of Showbread:Exodus 25:23 refers to the construction of the table of showbread. This table was made of shittim (acacia) wood and had specific dimensions: two cubits in length, one cubit in width, and one and a half cubits in height. This table was an important piece of furniture inside the tabernacle.

Symbolism and Purpose:

  • Symbolism: The table of showbread represented the fellowship and communion between God and His people. It was a symbol of provision, sustenance, and spiritual nourishment.
  • Purpose: The table was used to hold twelve loaves of bread, which were replaced every Sabbath. These loaves symbolized the twelve tribes of Israel and were called the “showbread” or “bread of the Presence.” The bread represented the people’s dependence on God for their physical needs and their spiritual sustenance.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Fellowship with God:The table of showbread reminds us of the importance of having a close relationship with God. Just as the table represented fellowship, we are called to commune with God through prayer, studying His Word, and worship.
  • Dependence on God:The showbread represented the people’s reliance on God for their sustenance. It teaches us to trust in God’s provision, not only for our physical needs but also for our spiritual nourishment. Jesus referred to Himself as the “bread of life” (John 6:35), emphasizing that He is the ultimate source of spiritual sustenance.
  • Remembrance of God’s faithfulness:The regular replacement of the showbread reminded the Israelites of God’s faithfulness in providing for them. It serves as a reminder for us to remember and acknowledge God’s faithfulness in our lives.

Application:

  • Cultivating Fellowship:We should prioritize spending time in fellowship with God, seeking His presence, and cultivating a deeper relationship with Him.
  • Dependence on God:Just as the Israelites depended on the showbread for sustenance, we need to rely on God for our daily needs, both physical and spiritual.
  • Gratitude and Remembrance:We should develop a heart of gratitude, remembering and acknowledging God’s faithfulness in our lives. We can take time to reflect on His provision, guidance, and blessings.

Remember, studying the Bible allows us to gain deeper insights into God’s character, His plan, and His relationship with humanity. By understanding the historical context, symbolism, and spiritual lessons, we can apply these truths to our lives and grow in our faith.
