Exodus 25:37

“And thou shalt make the seven lamps thereof: and they shall light the lamps thereof, that they may give light over against it.”

Context:This verse is part of the detailed instructions given by God to Moses for the construction of the tabernacle, a portable dwelling place for the presence of God among the Israelites during their wilderness journey. Here, God specifically directs the making of the lampstand, which was to be situated in the Holy Place of the tabernacle.

Symbolism of Light:The lamps mentioned in this verse symbolize light. Light is often associated with God’s presence, divine revelation, and guidance. In John 8:12, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world.” Therefore, the lampstand in the tabernacle signifies the presence of God and His illumination in the lives of His people.

The Lampstand:The lampstand was made of pure gold and had a central shaft with six branches extending from it, forming a total of seven lamps. These lamps were fueled by olive oil and were to be continually kept burning by the priests. The number seven in the Bible often represents completeness or perfection. Thus, the seven lamps represent the fullness of God’s light and His complete revelation to His people.

Function of the Lamps:The purpose of lighting the lamps was to give light over against the lampstand. The light was directed towards the table of showbread, which represented God’s provision, and the golden altar of incense, representing the prayers of the people. The lamps illuminated these sacred objects, emphasizing the significance of God’s provision and the importance of prayer in the life of His people.

Divine Revelation:The lampstand reminds us that God desires to reveal Himself to His people. As we seek Him through His Word and prayer, He illuminates our path and provides us with spiritual insight and understanding.

Witnessing:Just as the lampstand gave light for others to see, believers are called to be lights in the world (Matthew 5:14). We are to reflect the light of Christ, allowing His presence to shine through us, so that others may be drawn to Him.

Prayer and Provision:The lighting of the lamps towards the table of showbread and the altar of incense symbolizes the connection between prayer and God’s provision. Through prayer, we bring our needs, desires, and thanksgiving before God, and He graciously provides for us according to His will.

Perseverance:The lamps were to be continually kept burning. This serves as a reminder of the importance of steadfastness and perseverance in our faith. We are called to remain faithful, continually seeking God’s presence and allowing His light to shine in and through us.
