Exodus 26:22

Posted on 6 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And for the sides of the tabernacle westward thou shalt make six boards.”

Context:Exodus 26 describes the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary that the Israelites built in the wilderness according to God’s instructions. The tabernacle was a central place of worship and served as a dwelling place for God’s presence among His people.

Analysis:Symbolism of the Tabernacle: The tabernacle was a significant symbol in the Old Testament, representing God’s dwelling place among His people. It had several parts, including the Holy of Holies, the Holy Place, and the outer court. Each element and detail had specific purposes and meanings, reflecting God’s holiness, presence, and the way of approaching Him.

The Sides of the Tabernacle: Exodus 26:22 focuses on the construction of the sides of the tabernacle. The sides were made of boards, which were placed vertically and formed the walls of the tabernacle. In this verse, it specifically mentions the westward side, indicating a specific direction.

Significance of the Number Six: The verse mentions that six boards were used for the westward side of the tabernacle. The number six often symbolizes incompleteness or imperfection in biblical numerology. This could suggest that the sides of the tabernacle were not yet complete, as the structure required more boards to fully enclose it.

Unity and Interdependence: The construction of the tabernacle required careful craftsmanship and coordination. Each board was interconnected and dependent on the others to form a solid structure. This highlights the importance of unity and cooperation within the community of believers, working together for a common purpose.

Foreshadowing Christ: The tabernacle and its components, including the boards, were types and shadows pointing to Jesus Christ and His work of salvation. In the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the “temple” (John 2:19-21) and the “dwelling place” of God (Colossians 2:9). The construction of the tabernacle, including the boards, foreshadows the unity and interdependence of believers as members of the body of Christ.

Application:

Unity and Cooperation:Just as the boards were interconnected and dependent on one another, Christians should strive for unity and cooperation within the Church. We are called to work together, using our individual gifts and talents, to build up the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).

Christ as the Foundation:The tabernacle ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ as the true dwelling place of God. As believers, we should place our faith and trust in Christ, recognizing Him as the foundation of our lives and the source of our salvation (1 Corinthians 3:11).

Incompleteness and Growth:The mention of six boards in Exodus 26:22 reminds us that we are a work in progress. We are not yet fully complete but continually growing and maturing in our faith. It encourages us to press on, seeking spiritual growth and allowing God to shape us according to His purpose (Philippians 3:12-14).

Reverence for God’s Presence:The tabernacle was a place where God’s presence dwelled among His people. It reminds us of the importance of approaching God with reverence and awe. Through Jesus Christ, we have access to God’s presence (Hebrews 10:19-22), and we should come before Him with humility and respect.

Remember to study the Bible in its entirety, considering the broader context and consulting reliable commentaries to gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures.
