Exodus 27:3

Listen to this article

And thou shalt make his pannes to receiue his ashes, and his shouels, and his basons, and his fleshhooks, and his firepannes: all the vessels thereof thou shalt make of brasse. Exodus 27:3 (KJV)

The book of Exodus records the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land and includes detailed instructions for the construction of the tabernacle, the portable sanctuary used during their wilderness wanderings. God’s directives to Moses specify the making of particular vessels, each fashioned of durable brass, to serve distinct functions in the worship of the Lord.

The tabernacle was a sacred space where the people could offer sacrifices and experience God’s presence. Every element of its design was intended to symbolize spiritual truths and to point forward to the coming of Christ. In Exodus 27:3 the Lord commands the creation of pans, shovels, basons, fleshhooks, and firepans, each with a clear role in the altar rites.

The pans were placed to receive the ashes from the altar of burnt offering, reminding believers of the cleansing and purifying power of God’s forgiveness. Shovels were used to remove those ashes, emphasizing the need for order and cleanliness when approaching the Holy One. The basons (or basins) were employed in handling offerings and, according to one draft, for washing the priests’ hands and feet before they entered the sanctuary, symbolizing purity and consecration. Fleshhooks allowed the priests to turn and remove pieces of meat from the fire, underscoring the importance of proper handling of the sacrifices offered to God. Firepans carried coals from the altar to the incense altar, a vivid picture of fervent, continuous prayer and worship.

These vessels teach several spiritual lessons. The ashes collected in the pans point to God’s forgiveness and the grace that purifies our sins. The shovels illustrate the necessity of maintaining spiritual discipline and order. The basons teach us to approach God with a clean heart, while the fleshhooks and firepans call us to offer our worship and prayers with reverence, sincerity, and passion.

Application for today’s believers is clear: as living temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19), we are called to be vessels of honor, fashioned for unique purposes that reflect God’s glory (2 Tim 2:21). Like the brass vessels, our lives should be durable, purposeful, and dedicated to God’s service, embodying cleansing, consecration, reverence, and fervent prayer.

In conclusion, Exodus 27:3 not only details the practical items needed for tabernacle worship but also provides enduring symbolic meanings that encourage forgiveness, purity, orderly devotion, and passionate prayer in the life of every follower of Christ.
