Exodus 27:7

Listen to this article

And the staues shalbe put into the rings, and the staues shall be vpon the two sides of the Altar, to beare it. Exodus 27:7 (KJV)

Context: The book of Exodus records the story of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land. In this verse God gives Moses precise instructions concerning the construction of the altar of burnt offering.

The Altar of Burnt Offering:

The altar was a central structure in the tabernacle, the portable place of worship used by the Israelites during their wilderness wanderings. It was built of acacia wood, overlaid with bronze, and measured five cubits (about 7.5 feet) on each side and three cubits (about 4.5 feet) high. Its purpose was to receive the burnt sacrifices offered to the Lord.

The Staves:

God commanded that staves—poles of acacia wood overlaid with bronze—be inserted into the rings on the altar’s sides. These staves enabled the Levites to lift and transport the altar whenever the camp moved, preserving the continuity of worship.

Symbolism and Lessons:

Portability: The presence of staves underscores the tabernacle’s design for mobility. The Israelites were a nomadic people, and the altar’s ability to be moved reminds believers that worship is not confined to a building; God’s presence travels with His people.

Participation: Placing a stave on each side indicates shared responsibility among the priests and Levites. Likewise, every member of the body of Christ has a role in worship and service, contributing to the collective work of God.

Burden‑bearing: The staves bear the weight of the altar, symbolizing the challenges inherent in worship and service. God supplies the strength and grace needed to carry these burdens.

Obedience and Order: The precise placement of the staves reflects the importance of following God’s commands exactly. Faithful obedience brings order and reverence to our worship.

Application:

Portable worship: Just as the altar could be moved, believers can worship God wherever they are—at home, work, or in the community—carrying His presence with them.

Shared responsibility: Worship and service are not the task of a few; every believer is called to support one another and share the load of ministry.

Trust in God’s provision: The staves remind us that God equips us with the means to fulfill His purposes, even when difficulties arise.

Obedience and order: As the Israelites obeyed the detailed instructions for the altar, Christians are urged to live according to God’s Word, maintaining order and reverence in all aspects of worship.

Remember, the study and application of God’s Word extend beyond a single verse; they belong to the broader context and teachings of Scripture.
