Exodus 27:13

Listen to this article

“And the breadth of the court on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits.”

Historical Context:Exodus 27 describes the construction of the tabernacle, which was a portable sanctuary used by the Israelites during their journey in the wilderness. In this verse, specifically, the focus is on the construction of the outer court of the tabernacle.

Symbolism of the Court:The court mentioned in this verse refers to the outer courtyard surrounding the tabernacle. It was a rectangular space enclosed by curtains and supported by pillars. The court served as a barrier between the holy tabernacle and the secular world outside. It symbolized the separation of the sacred from the profane.

The Dimensions:The verse states that the breadth (width) of the court on the east side would be fifty cubits. A cubit is an ancient unit of measurement, approximately equal to the length from a person’s elbow to their fingertips, usually ranging from 18 to 21 inches. Therefore, the width of the court on the east side was approximately 75 to 87.5 feet.

Significance of the Number:The number fifty holds significance in the Bible. It represents the concept of jubilee and freedom. In the Year of Jubilee, which occurred every fifty years, debts were cancelled, slaves were set free, and property was restored. This number serves as a reminder of God’s provision and redemption.

Spiritual Application:

  • Separation:The court’s placement around the tabernacle reminds us of the importance of maintaining a separation between the holy and the secular in our lives. It encourages us to set aside sacred space and time for God, allowing Him to dwell and work in our lives.
  • Access to God:The court was the entrance to the tabernacle. Similarly, Jesus declared Himself as the way, the truth, and the life, emphasising that no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). We can approach God only through Jesus Christ.
  • Freedom and Restoration:The number fifty symbolises jubilee and restoration. In Christ, we find true freedom from sin and the restoration of our relationship with God. Through His sacrifice, Jesus cancelled our spiritual debts and set us free.

Practical Application:

  • Prioritise Sacred Time:Set aside dedicated time for prayer, worship, and studying God’s Word. Create a sacred space in your life where you can meet with God regularly.
  • Maintain Separation:Strive to live a life that reflects your commitment to Christ. Let your actions, speech, and choices reflect the values and principles of God’s kingdom.
  • Embrace Redemption:Recognise the freedom and restoration that Jesus offers. Allow His grace to transform your life and continually seek His guidance in all areas.

Remember, the Bible contains rich layers of meaning, and studying individual verses helps us uncover deeper truths and insights.
