Exodus 27:17

Listen to this article

"And all the pillars round about the court shall be filleted with silver; their hooks shall be of silver, and their sockets of brass."

Exodus 27:17 is part of the description of the construction of the tabernacle, specifically focusing on the outer court. In this verse, God gives instructions to Moses regarding the pillars that surround the court.

Pillars Filleted with Silver:The word "filleted" in this context means that the pillars were to be adorned or decorated with bands or strips of silver. This would add a beautiful and ornamental aspect to the pillars, signifying the importance and sanctity of the tabernacle.

Hooks of Silver:The hooks mentioned here were used to hold up the curtains that formed the walls of the court. These hooks were also to be made of silver, which further emphasizes the preciousness and sacredness of the tabernacle. The use of silver symbolises purity and redemption.

Sockets of Brass:The sockets mentioned in this verse were the bases or foundation upon which the pillars stood. They were to be made of brass, a durable and strong metal. Brass represents judgement and righteousness in biblical symbolism.

In the broader context of the book of Exodus, the tabernacle served as a central place of worship and communion between God and the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness. Its construction and the materials used were significant because they reflected the holiness and reverence with which the Israelites were to approach God.

Symbolically, this verse highlights the importance of adorning and dedicating the places of worship to God. The use of silver and brass, precious metals in biblical times, conveys the idea that worship and reverence should be offered with the utmost purity, righteousness, and judgement. It reminds believers that the places and objects used in worship should reflect God’s holiness and be treated with reverence.

Overall, Exodus 27:17 teaches us the value of consecrating and adorning places of worship, as well as the significance of approaching God with purity and righteousness in our hearts.
