Leviticus 5:6

And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the Lord for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his sin.

Leviticus 5:6 (KJV)

Leviticus is part of the Old Testament and belongs to the Pentateuch, also called the Torah. These are the laws God gave to Israel through Moses. This verse sits within instructions about offerings for sin, showing how the people could be restored to fellowship with God.

The verse describes a trespass offering, also called a guilt offering. A person who sinned brought a female lamb or a female goat from the flock. The animal was given to the LORD as a sin offering. The Hebrew word for this offering is “Asham,” which stresses the idea of guilt and the need to make things right. The sinner publicly acknowledged wrongdoing by presenting the animal, and the priest then made atonement, meaning a covering or reconciliation, for that person’s sin.

The requirement of a female animal points to purity and innocence in the sacrificial system. It was not a costly animal, so even ordinary people could afford it. This made forgiveness accessible to everyone in the community.

The same Hebrew word “Asham” appears in Isaiah 53:10, where the soul of Christ is described as an offering for sin. This shows that the trespass offering was a picture pointing forward to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The priest who mediated between the sinner and God also foreshadows Christ as our great High Priest, who intercedes for believers.

This passage teaches that sin is serious and breaks our relationship with God. It also shows that God provides a clear way to be forgiven. The offering required the sinner to take responsibility and to trust in God’s mercy. For today’s reader, this means we can confess our sins honestly, knowing that God has made a way for us to be reconciled through Christ.

The trespass offering reminds us that forgiveness is not automatic; it requires a response. The sinner had to bring the animal, and the priest had to perform the rite. In the same way, we are called to turn from sin and receive the forgiveness that God offers. The verse assures us that when we come to God with a sincere heart, He is faithful to restore us.
