Leviticus 5:10

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that contains detailed instructions and laws given by God to the Israelites, particularly regarding worship, offerings, and the priesthood. Leviticus 5:10 is part of a section that describes various offerings and sacrifices for different types of sins.

Offering for Sin:In this verse, the focus is on the offering made by someone who has committed a sin. The person is required to bring two offerings. The first offering is for the atonement of their sin, and the second offering is a burnt offering, which was a common type of offering in ancient Israel.

Atonement and Forgiveness:The purpose of the offerings is to provide atonement for the person’s sin and to obtain forgiveness from God. The act of offering the prescribed sacrifices symbolized the person’s repentance and desire for reconciliation with God. The priest would perform the necessary rituals and make atonement on behalf of the individual.

Symbolism and Foreshadowing:The offerings and sacrifices in the book of Leviticus served as a temporary system that pointed forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. The burnt offerings were a foreshadowing of Christ’s complete surrender and sacrifice for the sins of humanity. Through Jesus’ atoning work, believers can receive forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

Application:As believers, we can apply the principles from Leviticus 5:10 by recognising our sins, confessing them to God, and seeking His forgiveness. We no longer need to offer animal sacrifices because Jesus Christ has become the perfect sacrifice for our sins. Through faith in Him, we can experience the fullness of God’s forgiveness and restoration in our lives.

Remember, studying the Bible is a transformative journey that involves seeking a deeper understanding of God’s Word and applying its truths to our lives. May this study encourage you to seek God’s forgiveness and embrace the grace He offers through Jesus Christ.
