Leviticus 6:21
In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is baken, thou shalt bring it in: and the baken pieces of the meat offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the Lord.
Leviticus 6:21 (KJV)
Context
Leviticus records the laws God gave to Israel for worship and daily life. This verse belongs to the instructions for the meat offering, also called the grain offering. It was one of the offerings presented to the Lord at the tabernacle, and later at the temple.
Meaning
God specifies that the offering must be made in a pan with oil. After it is baked, the worshiper brings it in, and the baked pieces are offered for a sweet savour to the Lord. The oil and baking show careful preparation. The phrase “a sweet savour” means the offering pleases God. It is not only a physical act but also a spiritual one, expressing the worshiper’s devotion and obedience.
Biblical connections
Leviticus 2:4-7 gives similar rules for grain offerings prepared in an oven or pan. This shows that God cares about the details of worship. The New Testament teaches that Christ fulfilled the sacrificial system. Hebrews 10:10 explains that we are sanctified through the offering of Jesus once for all. Therefore, these Old Testament practices point forward to His perfect sacrifice.
Application
Christians no longer bring grain offerings because Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Yet this passage still teaches us about worship. God values sincere devotion and careful obedience. Our worship should be offered with a willing heart, not carelessly. Just as the offering was brought to the Lord, we can present our lives as living sacrifices, as Romans 12:1 urges. The oil in the offering can remind us of the Holy Spirit, who empowers our service. When we serve in His strength, our lives become a pleasing aroma to God.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that true worship is both inward and outward. The worshiper’s heart and the offering’s preparation mattered. God still looks at the attitude behind our actions. We can ask ourselves whether our service to Him is done with love and reverence, seeking to please Him in every detail.
