Leviticus 7:3

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof; the rump, and the fat that covereth the inwards.”

This verse is part of a larger passage that describes the offerings and sacrifices to be made by the Israelites in the tabernacle. In this specific verse, God instructs the people regarding the offering of fat from the animal sacrifice.

To understand the significance of this verse, we need to consider the context and the broader themes of Leviticus. The book of Leviticus focuses on the establishment of the Israelite priesthood and the regulations for their duties, as well as instructions for the people to maintain their relationship with God through worship, sacrifices, and holy living.

The offering of fat in Leviticus 7:3 holds symbolic and practical significance. Symbolically, fat is often associated with abundance, richness, and the best portions of an offering. By offering the fat, the Israelites were demonstrating their commitment to giving the best to God and acknowledging His provision.

Practically, the fat of an animal was considered the choicest part and was highly valued for its taste and nutritional value. However, in the sacrificial system, the fat was to be dedicated solely to God and not consumed by the Israelites. This act of relinquishing the fat underscored the idea of dedicating the best to God and separating it from everyday use.

In a broader sense, the regulations regarding offerings and sacrifices in Leviticus serve multiple purposes. They provide a means of atonement for sin, serve as a way to seek forgiveness and reconciliation with God, and teach the Israelites about holiness, obedience, and the seriousness of sin. The sacrificial system foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who would offer Himself as the perfect and final sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

It’s important to note that as Christians, our approach to the laws and regulations outlined in Leviticus is different from that of the Israelites. Through Jesus Christ, we are no longer bound by the sacrificial system and the ceremonial laws of the Old Covenant. Jesus fulfilled the requirements of the law and established a new covenant based on grace, forgiveness, and faith in Him.

However, studying the book of Leviticus can still offer valuable insights into the character of God, His holiness, and the principles of obedience and worship. It can deepen our understanding of the sacrificial system and its foreshadowing of Jesus’ sacrifice. Additionally, it reminds us of the importance of giving our best to God and dedicating our lives to Him.

In conclusion, Leviticus 7:3 instructs the Israelites to offer the fat from their sacrifices to God, symbolising their commitment to give the best to Him. While we are no longer bound by these specific regulations as Christians, studying this passage can provide us with valuable insights into God’s character and His desire for our wholehearted dedication.
