Leviticus 7:32

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest for an heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.”

Context:The book of Leviticus is a part of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible), and it primarily focuses on the laws and regulations given to the Israelites by God through Moses. Leviticus covers various aspects of worship, sacrifices, and ceremonial practices for the people of Israel.

Peace Offerings:In Leviticus 7, God provides specific instructions regarding the peace offerings. Peace offerings were a type of sacrifice offered voluntarily by individuals as an expression of thanksgiving, devotion, or to make a vow to God. These offerings could consist of both animals and grain.

Heave Offering:Leviticus 7:32 mentions the “heave offering.” In the context of peace offerings, the heave offering referred to a specific portion of the sacrifice that was set apart for the priest. It was presented by lifting or heaving it in a specific ritualistic manner before the Lord.

The Right Shoulder:Leviticus 7:32 specifies that the right shoulder of the peace offering was to be given to the priest as a heave offering. The right shoulder was considered a choice part of the animal, and it symbolized strength and power. By offering the right shoulder to the priest, the offerer acknowledged that their strength and provision came from God.

Symbolic Meaning:The act of giving the right shoulder as a heave offering held symbolic significance. It represented the offerer’s recognition that God is the ultimate provider and sustainer of their lives. By giving the best portion to the priest, the person demonstrated their gratitude and trust in God’s provision.

Lessons for Christians:While the laws and rituals of the Old Testament, including the practice of peace offerings, are not binding on Christians today, there are valuable principles we can derive from this passage. It reminds us of the importance of recognising God as the source of our blessings and acknowledging His provision in our lives.

Gratitude and Devotion:Leviticus 7:32 encourages us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and devotion toward God. Just as the Israelites expressed their thanksgiving through the peace offerings, we can show our gratitude to God by offering our lives, talents, and resources for His service.

Trusting in God’s Provision:The act of offering the right shoulder as a heave offering demonstrates trust in God’s provision. It reminds us to rely on Him for our needs, knowing that He will sustain us and provide for us as we seek to honour Him.

Jesus Christ as the Ultimate Offering:As Christians, we understand that Jesus Christ fulfilled the Old Testament sacrificial system. He became the ultimate sacrifice, offering Himself as the perfect Lamb of God to atone for our sins. Through His sacrifice, we are reconciled with God, and we no longer need to offer animal sacrifices or heave offerings.

In summary, Leviticus 7:32 illustrates the practice of giving the right shoulder as a heave offering to the priest from the peace offerings. While the specific rituals and regulations may not be applicable today, the passage reminds us of the importance of gratitude, devotion, and trusting in God’s provision in our lives.
