Leviticus 9:15

And he brought the people’s offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first.

Context

Leviticus records the laws God gave Israel, especially concerning the priesthood and sacrifices. Chapter 9 describes Aaron and his sons serving in the tabernacle for the first time after their consecration. Verse 15 focuses on the sin offering Aaron presented for the whole community.

Meaning

The sin offering atoned for unintentional sins by transferring guilt from the sinner to an innocent animal. Here, the goat is clearly the people’s sin offering. Leviticus 4 gives the procedure: a male goat for the congregation. The goat’s death shows substitution—the animal bears the penalty the people deserved.

The verse says Aaron slew the goat and offered it for sin. The slaying shows how serious sin is and that bloodshed is necessary for atonement. By offering the animal, the people sought reconciliation with God and admitted their sinfulness. The phrase “as the first” means Aaron followed the same steps for the people’s offering as he had for his own, showing careful obedience to God’s command.
