Leviticus 10:6

Posted on 31 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord hath kindled.”

Leviticus 10:6 occurs in the context of an event known as the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests. In this passage, Aaron’s two eldest sons, Nadab and Abihu, had just offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which was a violation of God’s command. As a result, the Lord consumed them with fire, and they died.

In the aftermath of this tragic incident, Moses addresses Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar. He instructs them not to uncover their heads or tear their clothes as signs of mourning, which were customary practices in that culture. Moses warns that if they did so, they would face death, and the wrath of God might come upon the entire congregation of Israel. Instead, Moses advises Aaron and his sons to allow the people, their fellow Israelites, to mourn the loss of Nadab and Abihu.

This passage highlights several key points:

  • Reverence for God’s commands:Nadab and Abihu’s disobedience in offering unauthorized fire before the Lord resulted in severe consequences. It emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s instructions and not taking His holiness lightly.
  • The responsibility of the priesthood:Aaron and his sons were consecrated as priests, and their role involved maintaining reverence and obedience in the sanctuary. The incident with Nadab and Abihu serves as a reminder of the weightiness and seriousness of their priestly duties.
  • The impact of one’s actions on others:Moses warns Aaron and his sons that their actions could potentially affect the entire community. Their inappropriate response to the deaths of Nadab and Abihu could bring about God’s anger and judgment upon the people. This underscores the interconnectedness of individuals within a community and the potential consequences of their behavior.
  • The importance of mourning:While Aaron and his remaining sons were instructed not to outwardly express their grief, the people of Israel were encouraged to mourn and lament the loss of Nadab and Abihu. This indicates the significance of acknowledging and processing grief within the community.

In summary, Leviticus 10:6 presents a cautionary lesson about the reverence for God’s commands, the responsibility of the priesthood, the impact of individual actions on the community, and the importance of communal mourning. It reminds us to approach our relationship with God with respect and obedience and to recognize the consequences our actions may have on those around us.
