Leviticus 11:12
Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.
Leviticus 11:12 (KJV)
Context
Leviticus 11 records the dietary laws God gave to Israel through Moses. These rules separated clean animals from unclean ones. This verse focuses on water creatures, declaring that any without fins and scales is an abomination. The same principle appears in Leviticus 11:10, showing its importance. The rule was given to teach Israel to be holy, as God is holy, and to keep them distinct from other nations.
Meaning
Fins and scales are the signs God gave for clean water life. They allow fish to move well and give protection. A creature lacking both was not considered suitable for food. The word “abomination” is strong, showing how seriously God viewed disobedience. The rule was not about nutrition alone; it taught Israel to accept God’s authority over every part of life. The only sign for clean water creatures was the presence of fins and scales, making the command clear and simple to follow.
Biblical connections
These laws set Israel apart from other nations and pointed to holiness. In the New Testament, Jesus declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19), and Peter’s vision confirmed this (Acts 10:15). So the food rules no longer bind Christians. Yet the deeper lesson remains: God’s people are called to be distinct and obedient. The principle of separation from what God deems unclean continues to apply, pointing to the need for spiritual purity.
Application
For today, this verse is not about choosing fish. It reminds us that God defines what is clean and unclean. We honor Him by obeying His commands, even when we do not fully understand them. The principle of separation from what God calls unclean still applies to our hearts and actions. We are to avoid what dishonors Him and pursue holiness in our daily lives.
Reflection
This law foreshadows the cleansing that comes through Christ. He purifies believers from all defilement. As we read this old command, we can thank God for His holiness and for the grace that makes us clean. Let us live as people set apart for Him, recognizing that our obedience flows from gratitude for His mercy.
