Leviticus 11:46
This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:
Leviticus 11:46 (KJV)
Context
Leviticus 11 records God’s laws to Israel about clean and unclean animals. These rules separated what could be eaten from what could not. Verse 46 is the closing summary of that chapter. It names four groups: beasts, fowl, creatures that move in the waters, and creatures that creep on the earth. This shows that the instructions cover every kind of living thing. The verse is a structural marker, concluding the legal section and preparing for the next verse.
Meaning
The verse gathers all the earlier details into one clear statement. It is not just a list; it points to the need for discernment in daily life. The next verse, Leviticus 11:47, explains the purpose: to make a difference between the unclean and the clean. This summary emphasizes that the regulations apply comprehensively to all these groups. God gave these laws through Moses as part of the covenant relationship with Israel.
Biblical connections
The call to holiness stands behind these laws. Leviticus 11:44-45 says, “Ye shall be holy: for I am holy.” The dietary rules were one way Israel lived as God’s holy people. In the New Testament, Jesus declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19). Acts 10 shows Peter learning that God has made clean what was once called unclean. This does not cancel the principle of holiness; it shows that Christ fulfilled the ceremonial law. The purpose of these laws was to set Israel apart as God’s holy people, promoting holiness in daily life, including diet.
Application
For Christians today, the specific food laws no longer bind us. Yet the deeper lesson remains: God cares about every part of life, including ordinary eating. Obedience and self-control are still important. We are called to live distinctly, not to follow every custom of the world around us. This verse demonstrates God’s concern for every aspect of life, even the ordinary details of eating.
Reflection
This verse invites us to consider the completeness of God’s instruction. Nothing is too small for His concern. As we eat, work, and rest, we can remember that our whole lives are to be lived before Him. The summary in verse 46 reminds us that God’s word covers all our ways, and He calls us to be holy in all of them. The summary nature of the verse invites reflection on the completeness of God’s instruction and the call to live distinctly as God’s people.
