Leviticus 13:36

Listen to this article

“Then the priest shall look on him; and, behold, if the scall be spread in the skin, the priest shall not seek for yellow hair; he is unclean.”

Context and Background:The book of Leviticus is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Old Testament. It primarily focuses on the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses, particularly concerning worship, ritual purity, and holiness. Leviticus contains detailed instructions for various situations, including guidelines on identifying and dealing with various skin diseases, such as leprosy.

Understanding Leviticus 13:36:Leviticus 13 describes the procedures the Israelites were to follow in diagnosing and dealing with various skin diseases or infections. Verse 36 specifically addresses a particular case where a "scall" (a skin eruption or sore) is present on an individual.

According to the verse, if the scall has spread on the person’s skin, the priest examining them should not search for yellow hair. The presence of yellow hair was often considered a symptom or indication of a deeper problem, potentially suggesting the individual’s impurity or contagiousness. However, in this case, the spread of the scall alone is enough for the priest to determine that the person is unclean.

Spiritual and Symbolic Interpretation:While this passage primarily deals with specific instructions for dealing with skin diseases within the context of ancient Israel, it can also hold symbolic and spiritual meaning for believers today.

  • Holiness and Purity: The regulations on skin diseases in Leviticus serve as a reminder of the importance of holiness and purity before God. The contagious nature of certain conditions emphasizes the need for separation from anything that can defile or corrupt spiritually.
  • The Role of the Priest: The priest played a crucial role as the mediator between the people and God. They were responsible for examining and making determinations regarding the people’s physical and ritual purity. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is referred to as the High Priest who intercedes on behalf of believers, bringing spiritual healing and forgiveness.
  • Spiritual Application: While the specific laws outlined in Leviticus are no longer applicable in the same way today, the principles behind them can still be relevant. As Christians, we are called to pursue holiness and avoid things that defile us spiritually. This can involve examining our lives, identifying areas of sin or impurity, and seeking God’s cleansing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

It’s important to note that the interpretation and application of biblical passages can vary among individuals and denominations. Therefore, it is always beneficial to study the Bible within your faith community, seeking guidance from trusted spiritual leaders and resources.
