Leviticus 13:40

Posted on 10 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And the man whose hair is fallen off his head, he is bald; yet is he clean.”

This verse is part of a larger section in the book of Leviticus that deals with the laws concerning various skin diseases, including leprosy. In this particular verse, the focus is on a man who has experienced hair loss on his head, rendering him bald.

In the context of the ceremonial laws given to the Israelites, baldness in itself was not considered unclean or impure. The verse affirms that despite his condition, the bald man is clean. In this case, “clean” refers to the man’s ritual purity, meaning he is not ceremonially defiled or excluded from participating in religious activities.

However, it’s important to note that the mention of baldness in this verse is specifically addressing the issue within the context of the skin diseases discussed in Leviticus. The book of Leviticus emphasizes the importance of maintaining cleanliness and purity, particularly in relation to the tabernacle and the priestly duties. It provides detailed instructions for diagnosing and addressing various skin conditions to prevent the spread of disease and maintain the sanctity of the community.

It’s worth mentioning that the laws and regulations found in Leviticus, including those related to skin diseases, were part of the Old Testament covenant given to the Israelites. As Christians, we are not bound by these ceremonial laws and rituals because Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the law through His life, death, and resurrection (Matthew 5:17, Romans 10:4, Galatians 3:24-25

In summary:Leviticus 13:40 teaches us about the specific guidelines given to the Israelites regarding skin diseases, including the case of a bald man. While baldness itself was not considered unclean, the broader context of the passage emphasizes the importance of maintaining purity and ritual cleanliness within the Israelite community. As Christians, we are no longer under the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament but are called to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and live by His example.
